On 22 May 2026, staff members of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, who also serve as staff of the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE), Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), together with partners, participated in a climate change dissemination activity at Astri Al Ikhlas Islamic Senior High School, Tanjung Batu Seberang Village, Ogan Ilir Regency.
The activity was conducted as a follow-up to the recommendations and outcomes of the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on climate change organized by the Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Sriwijaya, under the Equity Program. It aimed to raise environmental awareness and improve students’ understanding of climate change through educational and collaborative activities.
The event was opened by Mr. Rian Hafidz, Head of Astri Al Ikhlas Islamic Senior High School, and Dr. Melki, representing Universitas Sriwijaya. In their remarks, they emphasized the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and stakeholders in addressing climate and environmental challenges.
Several speakers contributed to the activity. Dr. Jitraporn Phaksopa from Kasetsart University, Thailand, delivered a presentation on global climate change, including its causes, impacts, and relevance to local environmental conditions. Ms. Sevi Sawestri from SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and RIIFE-MMAF presented material on climate change and its impacts on inland water ecosystems, highlighting the importance of sustainable resource management and conservation.
In addition, Mr. Aroef Hukmanan Rais from SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and RIIFE-MMAF introduced students to water quality measurement using digital instruments in freshwater fish ponds. This practical session helped students understand the importance of monitoring environmental parameters in fisheries and aquatic ecosystem management.
At the end of the activity, Mr. Freddy Supriyadi from SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and RIIFE-MMAF, together with representatives from Kasetsart University, joined a campus tour at Universitas Sriwijaya to strengthen institutional networking and explore future academic and research collaboration.
