SEAFDEC/IFRDMD Showcases Hydroacoustic Research at AFAS 2026
Yeosu, Republic of Korea, 1-4 November. Advancing scientific approaches to inland fisheries resources assessment, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD contributed to the 19th Annual Meeting and International Conference of the Asian Fisheries Acoustics Society (AFAS), held in Yeosu, Republic of Korea.
Representing SEAFDEC Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD), Mr Freddy Supriyadi, a staff member of the Department and Junior Instructor at the Institute for Marine and Fisheries Extension, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia, , presented research in the application of hydroacoustic technology to assess fish density in tropical river ecosystems.
His oral presentation entitled “Estimating Fish Density in a Shallow Tropical River System: A Hydroacoustic Survey of the Musi River, South Sumatra, Indonesia,” Explored the application of hydroacoustic surveys to estimate fish density in the Musi River, one of the Indonesia’s major river systems. The study was co-authored by Freddy Supriyadi, Maulana Firdaus, Toru Shimoda, Aroef Hukmanan Rais, Dina Muthmainnah, Rezki Antoni Suhaimi, Muhammad Romdonul Hakim, and Ellis Nurjuliasti Ningsih.
The research underscored the potential of hydroacoustic technology as a valuable tool for understanding fish distribution and abundance, particularly in shallow tropical river environments where conventional fisheries assessment methods may present practical challenges. Such approaches offer promising opportunities to strengthen the scientific evidence base for inland fisheries resource assessment, monitoring, and management.
Beyond presenting research findings, AFAS 2026 provided a valuable international platform for scientific dialogue, knowledge exchange, and engagement with researchers and experts working in fisheries acoustics. The event also opened opportunities to strengthen professional networks and explore the further development of innovative acoustic technologies for fisheries research.
Supported by the Japanese Trust Fund VII (JTF VII), this participation reflects SEAFDEC/IFRDMD’s continued commitment to scientific knowledge exchange and the advancement of innovative approaches to sustainable fisheries resource management in Southeast Asia.
