SEAFDEC/IFRDMD Highlights Inland Fisheries Research at SICO-FIMS 2026
The Sriwijaya International Conference on Fisheries and Marine Science or SICO-FIMS 2026 was held on 18 June 2026 under the theme “Sustainable Marine and Fisheries as a Pillar for Achieving the SDGs.” The event was conducted in a hybrid format, with the offline session held at Hotel Beston Palembang, Indonesia, and the online session conducted through Zoom Meeting and YouTube Streaming.
The event was opened with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Rujito Agus Suwignyo, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Quality Assurance of Universitas Sriwijaya. In his opening remarks, Prof. Rujito expressed the university’s support for strengthening research, academic collaboration, and scientific development in the fields of fisheries and marine science.
In this event, SEAFDEC also served as one of the supporting partners. The Deputy Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, Mr. Toru Shimoda, attended the opening ceremony as a form of support for strengthening scientific collaboration and fisheries research development at the regional level.
SICO-FIMS 2026 featured several keynote speakers from various international institutions. The keynote speakers were Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe (Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, Kyushu University); Prof. Luky Adrianto (Department of Aquatic Resources Management, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, International Research Institute for Maritime, Ocean and Fisheries, IPB University); Dr. Suriyan Tunkijjanukij (Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University); Dr. Umesh Bapurao Patil (Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agro-Industry, Prince of Songkla University); and Dr. Omkar Vijay Dyagi (Shellfish Immunology, Aquaculture, International College, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology).
In addition, four SEAFDEC/IFRDMD staff members also served as speakers in the offline session, presenting study results related to SPEECTRA, hydroacoustic, eel fisheries, and small-scale fisheries. Their participation reflected SEAFDEC/IFRDMD’s contribution to supporting scientific development, sustainable fisheries management, and scientific knowledge exchange, particularly in the field of inland fisheries.
Through this conference, researchers, academics, practitioners, and stakeholders in the fisheries and marine sectors were able to share research findings, strengthen collaborative networks, and promote the sustainable management of fisheries and marine resources.
As the closing session, SICO-FIMS 2026 was officially closed by Prof. Dr. A. Muslim, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya. It is hoped that similar events can be held again in the coming years as part of a continued commitment to advancing sustainable marine and fisheries development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference also underscored the importance of effective inland fisheries management in sustaining freshwater ecosystems, strengthening food security, conserving biodiversity, and supporting community livelihoods.
