IFRDMD Attends the 16th AFAS in Shanghai, China

On 13 – 16 November 2023, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD represented by Mr. Freddy Supriyadi attended the International Conference on Underwater Acoustics for Sustainable Fisheries in Asia and the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of Asian Fisheries Acoustics Society (AFAS) in Shanghai China. The conference was organized by the AFAS committee and local committee by Shanghai Ocean University.

AFAS was first established in 2007 in Dalian, China, and this year’s AFAS 2023 is the fourth time it has been held in China, After AFAS 2011 in Qingdao and AFAS 2017 in Guangzhou. In additional to International academic and technical exchanges for fishery acoustics, AFAS has become an important platform for training students to become researchers in the field of fishery acoustics. AFAS is to promote further progress of science and technologies in fisheries acoustics in Asia. This year, over 50 younger scientists and students participated in the conference. All participants feel free to discuss and exchanges opinions, to make this meeting successfully.

This year is the first opportunity for IFRDMD to attend the AFAS Conference. Mr. Freddy Supriyadi presented a paper entitled “The Comparison of Daytime and Night-Time Survey with Acoustics Horizontal Beaming: Study Case in Cimandiri River, Indonesia”. Acoustics Technology can be applied in inland waters apart from marine waters. The study of inland fisheries acoustics have begun to carry out with density estimation and other topics monitoring for sustainable fisheries.
