SEAFDEC Delegation Visits SPEECTRA Models and Inland Fisheries Facilities in Palembang
On 9 December 2025, a SEAFDEC delegation visited the Swamp Fishery Installation of the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE) in Patra Tani Village, Muara Belida District, Muara Enim, Indonesia, to observe inland fisheries development activities and strengthen technical collaboration. The visit was attended by SEAFDEC Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Koichi Tahara, a representative from the SEAFDEC Secretariat, the Chief and Deputy Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, the Head of RIIFE, and staff from IFRDMD, demonstrating the strong commitment of both institutions to supporting sustainable inland fisheries.
During the program, the delegation reviewed the SPEECTRA site and received detailed explanations of the six SPEECTRA models, each designed to demonstrate practical approaches to habitat conservation, stock enhancement, and community-based management in swamp and floodplain ecosystems around Patra Tani. IFRDMD staff explained how each model is tested, how it can be applied under real field conditions, and how local communities can participate in managing and protecting fish habitats. The participants also visited the fish hatchery ponds, where breeding and rearing activities are conducted to support restocking and the conservation of important freshwater species. In addition, they observed a collection of live fish and preserved specimens representing species that inhabit the Musi River and its connected wetlands.
The visit also highlighted that SPEECTRA activities have begun contributing to the enrichment of fish stocks in the surrounding waters, helping maintain biodiversity and improve the availability of fish resources for local fishers. Overall, the visit provided a clearer understanding of the technical aspects and local context of SPEECTRA implementation in Patra Tani Village. It further emphasized the initiative’s potential as a model that can be shared, adapted, and replicated in other inland water bodies across the ASEAN region to support sustainable fisheries development and enhance the livelihoods of fishing communities.
