IFRDMD Hosts the 2025 JTF Semi-Annual Meeting

On 2 September 2025, the Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD) convened the 2025 JTF Semi-Annual Meeting at the SEAFDEC/IFRDMD premises in Palembang, Indonesia. The meeting served as an important platform to review the progress of ongoing projects and to present implementation plans for the remainder of the year, reaffirming IFRDMD’s strong commitment to advancing the sustainable management of inland fisheries in the region. The event was attended by Mr. Andi Soesmono, Chief of IFRDMD, Mr. Toru Shimoda, Deputy Chief of IFRDMD, and IFRDMD staff members.

Two major projects were presented during the session. The first, Enhanced Research Capacities for Sustainable Utilization and Management of Eel and Other Inland Fisheries Resources, aims to strengthen scientific research and technical capacities to ensure the sustainable use of inland fisheries resources. Particular emphasis is placed on improving data collection and analysis, with special attention given to anguillid eels and other species of ecological and economic importance. The second, Improving Fisher’s Livelihood and Fisheries Co-Management in Inland and Coastal Small-Scale Fisheries, is designed to enhance the welfare of local fishing communities through participatory management. By advancing co-management frameworks and introducing alternative livelihood initiatives, this project seeks to empower small-scale fishers while fostering resilience in both inland and coastal fisheries.

In their presentations, IFRDMD staff reported on the achievements to date, including field activities, stakeholder consultations, and technical outputs, while also outlining strategies to achieve the agreed targets within the 2025 timeframe. The deliberations were enriched by constructive comments, questions, and recommendations from participants, which are expected to strengthen reporting practices and further enhance the effectiveness of project implementation.
