SEAFDEC/IFRDMD organizes the Workshop on Community Based-Management for Sustainable Inland Fisheries Conservation with researcher and stakeholder of peatlands

Peatlands are terrestrial wetland ecosystems that have various functions as carbon storage, nutrient retention, and provide water to other ecosystems. This ecosystem is rich in biological diversity. The integrated peatlands management and research could increase the economic value and improve the environmental function of this ecosystem. Therefore, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD organized the Workshop on Community Based-Management for Sustainable Inland Fisheries Conservation with researcher and stakeholder of peatlands in 16 December 2021.

 

The workshop was done through a video conference and an offline hosted in Riau, Indonesia. This event was attendance by officers of Department of Fisheries (DOF) Riau Province, DOF Pelalawan, DOF Bengkalis, DOF Kampar, DOF Siak, Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) Riau Prov., Department of Environment and Forestry of Riau Prov., Sinar Mas Forestry, Charlesh Sturt University, Research Institute for Aquaculture, Academies of Riau University, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), and SEAFDEC/Training Departement (TD), Marine Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (MFRDMD), and IFRDMD. The aims of this workshop ware share knowledge of sustainable freshwater ecology research and management; informed about sustainable conservation strategies and community integrated management of peat land; and shared the information of SPEECTRA model.

 

Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, Dr. Arif Wibowo, delivered the opening remarks and cited that strategies in used and management of peatlands was important in order to achieve optimum utilization and maintaining its ecological functions. This event is also conducted the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and Fishery and Marine Faculty of Riau University. Its an opportunity for IFRDMD to promote the SPEECTRA model as conservation and management of fish in peatlands and to explore research among stakeholders in Riau.
