Musi Banyuasin Fisheries Service Visits RIIFE and SEAFDEC/IFRDMD

On Friday, 6 March 2026, the Fisheries Service of Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia, visited the office of the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the SEAFDEC/Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD) in Palembang. The visit aimed to strengthen communication through consultation and coordination on exploring the potential of inland fisheries resources and identifying possible strategies for their sustainable management and utilization.

Musi Banyuasin Regency is known for its extensive inland waters, including rivers, floodplains, and swamp ecosystems that support diverse fish resources and provide important livelihoods for local communities. Therefore, strengthening coordination with research institutions and regional fisheries organizations is considered essential to support the sustainable development of inland fisheries in the region.

During the visit, the delegation exchanged information with experts from RIIFE and SEAFDEC/IFRDMD on the current status of inland fisheries resources, ecosystem management approaches, and opportunities for future collaboration in research, capacity building, and community-based fisheries management.

During the discussion, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD also shared the results of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) activities conducted in 2024, including several recommendations for strengthening inland fisheries management. In addition, discussions were held on the lebak lebung auction system, which is one of the traditional inland fisheries management practices implemented in Indonesia. Experiences from ASEAN Member States (AMSs) regarding inland fisheries management approaches were also highlighted as references that could support the development and implementation of fisheries management activities in Musi Banyuasin Regency.
