SEAFDEC/IFRDMD Participates in Marino Forum 21

From 1 to 19 September 2025, Ms. Dwi Rizki Septiana of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD participated in the Marino Forum 21 in Japan. The program was designed to enhance participants’ understanding of freshwater and coastal ecosystem management through a combination of fieldwork, laboratory practice, and academic exchange with research institutes across Japan.

On 3–5 September 2025, she conducted practical water sampling at Trout Lake, located near the Fisheries Technology Institute, Fisheries Research Agency (FRA). Under the supervision of Dr. Yamamoto, Group Head of the Coastal and Inland Fisheries Ecosystem Division, she learned various sampling techniques and analytical methods for assessing water quality and aquatic ecosystem health. This hands-on experience strengthened her technical capacity in environmental monitoring and data collection for inland aquatic systems.

From 8–12 September 2025, she continued her learning activities at the Institute of Freshwater Biology, Nagano University, in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture. Guided by Prof. Hakoyama and Dr. Ohara, she was introduced to ongoing research projects on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. The visit provided opportunities for academic exchange and discussions on applying scientific research to sustainable inland fisheries management in Southeast Asia.

On 16 September 2025, she visited the Gifu Prefectural Institute for Fisheries and Aquatic Environments, where she was welcomed by local researchers and technical staff. The visit included an introduction to the Institute’s research facilities and ongoing projects focusing on aquatic resource management in Gifu Prefecture. A highlight of the session was a presentation on the application of environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis for monitoring freshwater fish biodiversity and distribution, showcasing innovative and non-invasive methods in aquatic research.

This activity reflects IFRDMD’s ongoing commitment to enhancing scientific understanding and developing effective methodologies to support sustainable inland fisheries across the ASEAN region.
