IFRDMD Shares Hydroacoustic Expertise in Lampung, Indonesia
The Laboratory of Marine Resources Exploration and Acoustics, Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Sriwijaya, in collaboration with SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) of Indonesia, successfully organized a training activity entitled “Training of Trainers for Enhancing the Competence of Marine Resources Exploration and Acoustic Laboratory Assistants to Support Laboratory Management and Practicum Activities.” The activity was held on 19–21 June 2026 at the Lampung Marine Aquaculture Center, MMAF, Indonesia.
Mr. Freddy Supriyadi, a staff member of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and Junior Instructor at the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE), MMAF of Indonesia, was invited as a resource person for the training. He delivered materials on the introduction and operational procedures of the SIMRAD EK15 Single Beam Echosounder.
The training was officially opened by Ms. Ellis Nurjuliasti Ningsih, Head of the Laboratory of Marine Resources Exploration and Acoustics of Universitas Sriwijaya. A total of 13 students from the Department of Marine Science, Universitas Sriwijaya, participated in the program as laboratory assistants.
During the training, lecturers from Universitas Sriwijaya also delivered several key topics, including laboratory management, laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidelines for developing fisheries socio-economic questionnaires, operational procedures for water quality equipment, and the introduction and operation of AUV/drone technology.
In addition to classroom sessions, participants joined field practice activities to strengthen their technical skills in operating equipment under real field conditions. Through this training program, participants are expected to improve their competencies in laboratory management, marine exploration technology, and acoustic instrumentation, which will support future practicum and research activities.
As a regional training and knowledge-sharing initiative, the activity also demonstrates SEAFDEC/IFRDMD’s commitment to enhancing technical competencies in fisheries resource assessment and aquatic resource management across Southeast Asia. The experience and training materials developed through this program may serve as a model for future capacity-building activities among SEAFDEC Member Countries, supporting the development of regional expertise in hydroacoustic applications, laboratory management, and fisheries research. Ultimately, such efforts contribute to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing sustainable fisheries development in the Southeast Asian region.
After the event was officially closed, the participants expressed their hope that similar training activities could be continued, particularly through more intensive field practice to strengthen their technical skills and hands-on field experience.
