Field Monitoring Under the JAIF Project on Tropical Eel Research and Management

On 11 December 2025, as part of the End Project activities of the Japan–ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) Project entitled “The Development of Stock Assessment Method and Strengthening of Resource Management Measures for Tropical Anguillid Eel in Southeast Asia,” SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, in collaboration with the SEAFDEC Secretariat, conducted field monitoring activities in Poso, Central Sulawesi. The field mission was led by IFRDMD Deputy Chief Mr. Toru Shimoda, together with SEAFDEC Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Koichi Tahara.
The mission aimed to review project implementation at the local level, validate monitoring results, and directly engage with fishers who have been key contributors to the JAIF Project. Several sampling sites representing different eel life stages were visited.
In Pandiri Village, the team observed elver and yellow eel sampling activities supported by Mr. Adri, who has consistently contributed catch data and field observations throughout the project. At the Poso River mouth, the delegation visited the glass eel sampling site operated by Mr. Irwan and his team, which provides essential information on early life-stage eel fisheries.
During the field activities, Mr. Koichi Tahara expressed his sincere appreciation to the fishers for their strong cooperation and valuable contributions. Mr. Toru Shimoda also conveyed his gratitude and emphasized that the active participation of fishers has been fundamental to data collection, field monitoring, and strengthening scientific understanding of tropical anguillid eel resources in Poso.
In addition to on-site observations, the SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and SEAFDEC Secretariat teams conducted interviews with fishers to gain deeper insights into current eel fishery conditions, including catch trends, fishing practices, field challenges, and local perspectives on sustainability.
The information gathered will support the final evaluation of the JAIF Project and provide important inputs for shaping future initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainable management of tropical anguillid eel resources in Southeast Asia.
