The Studium Generale featured Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University, Japan, as the keynote speaker. He delivered a lecture entitled “Ocean Plastics Pollution and Its Relation to Oceanography.” The session was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Rozirwan, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and moderated by Dr. Tengku Zia Ulqodry, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Marine Science.
During the lecture, Prof. Isobe explained the growing threat of ocean plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, and highlighted how oceanographic processes such as currents, vertical mixing, and coastal circulation influence the movement, accumulation, and fate of plastic debris in marine environments. The event was attended by lecturers and students from various departments under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, as well as the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya.
SEAFDEC/IFRDMD’s participation in this forum reflected its commitment to strengthening scientific knowledge exchange and raising awareness of plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems. This engagement also aligns with IFRDMD’s efforts to support the monitoring and mitigation of microplastic contamination in inland and marine fisheries resources across Southeast Asia.
