SEAFDEC/IFRDMD SUPPORT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Sriwijaya, conducted a Community Engagement Program on 9 September 2026 in Tanjung Batu Seberang Village, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The activity focused on empowering housewives to prepare nutritious and practical fish-based family menus in support of the GEMARIKAN (Fish Consumption Campaign) program.

The activity was supported by one staff member from the SEAFDEC/Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (SEAFDEC/IFRDMD) and two Fisheries Extension Officers from the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE), Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), Indonesia.

Through practical demonstrations and direct interaction with the community, participants were introduced to various ways of preparing locally available fish into nutritious and appealing family meals, particularly for children. The activity aimed to raise awareness of the nutritional benefits of fish and encourage more regular fish consumption at the household level.

The participation of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and RIIFE-MMAF also provided opportunities for knowledge exchange and strengthened collaboration among academic institutions, fisheries agencies, regional organizations, and local communities.

The program contributes to the objectives of GEMARIKAN by promoting diversified fish-based foods and encouraging greater use of local fishery resources. It also highlights the important role of inland fisheries in supporting food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and sustainable community development.
