SEAFDEC Observes Local Innovation in Tropical Anguillid Eel Cultivation in Cimahi, Indonesia

Following the successful completion of the four-day Technical Workshop on CPUE (Catch Per Unit Effort) Analysis and Stock Assessment for Tropical Anguillid Eel in Bandung, representatives from the SEAFDEC Secretariat, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, and Prof. Toshihide Kitakado from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) conducted a field visit to an eel farm located in Cimahi Utara, West Java, on 22 June 2025.

The farm, developed by Mr. Vidy, utilizes Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology featuring a patented rotary drum filter, demonstrating an innovative approach to sustainable eel farming. The farm focuses on the cultivation of Anguilla bicolor, a species native to tropical regions. Mr. Vidy has also engaged local communities in adopting similar practices to ensure a stable supply of eels, primarily aimed at meeting the growing demand from Japanese restaurants across Indonesia. This initiative not only supports local livelihoods but also contributes to sustainable aquaculture development in the region.

The visit forms part of the JAIF-supported project titled “Development of Stock Assessment Methods and Strengthening of Resources Management Measures for Tropical Anguillid Eel in Southeast Asia – Phase 2,” funded by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). The project aims to enhance scientific knowledge and management measures for the conservation and sustainable use of tropical anguillid eel resources throughout Southeast Asia.
