This workshop served as a follow-up technical session aimed at deepening the discussions and technical exchanges from the Project End Meeting. It focused on the application and refinement of analytical approaches for Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) and stock assessment of tropical anguillid eels across the ASEAN Member States (AMSs).
The technical session was led by Prof. Toshihide Kitakado from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT), who shared his expertise on advanced stock assessment modeling and the interpretation of fisheries data for management purposes. Through his guidance, participants gained valuable insights into statistical modeling, data calibration, and the evaluation of eel stock dynamics, which are essential for developing effective and science-based management measures.
Participants from SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and the SEAFDEC Secretariat collaborated to harmonize data collection methods and apply various stock assessment models using regional datasets. The discussions also emphasized the importance of improving data quality, incorporating biological and environmental parameters, and validating analytical outputs to ensure reliable stock estimates.
By the end of the workshop, participants identified priority actions to enhance data standardization and strengthen technical capacity among AMS researchers. The outcomes of this workshop are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of sustainable management measures for tropical anguillid eel fisheries under the ongoing JAIF-supported project, further reinforcing SEAFDEC’s commitment to advancing regional collaboration in inland fisheries management.
