Strengthening Eel Research and Partnerships in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia

To strengthen coordination on the management of tropical anguillid eel resources in Sulawesi, the SEAFDEC Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD), together with the SEAFDEC Secretariat, conducted a visit to Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, on 12 December 2025. The mission was led by IFRDMD Deputy Chief Mr. Toru Shimoda and joined by a SEAFDEC Secretariat delegation led by Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Koichi Tahara. The visit aimed to exchange field-based information, strengthen partnerships with local stakeholders, and support the responsible and sustainable management of eel resources.

In Palu, the delegation met with Mr. Fadly Y. Tantu of the Sulawesi Biodiversity Resources Technical Implementation Unit, Tadulako University, who also serves as President of the Indonesian Society for Tropical Eel Studies (ISTEs). Discussions focused on the current status of eel resources in Sulawesi, including field conditions, trends in eel availability, and challenges related to habitat conditions and resource utilization. It was noted that eels are still present in Sulawesi waters; however, continuous coordination, monitoring, and active stakeholder engagement are essential to ensure sustainable use.

The delegation also visited Banua Sidat and met with its representative, Mr. Handri, to gain insights into eel distribution in Central Sulawesi, resource availability for collectors, and supply chain conditions. It was shared that Banua Sidat operates not only within Sulawesi but also exports eel products to international markets, including China and Viet Nam. During the visit, Mr. Koichi Tahara emphasized the importance of reliable, field-based information from businesses and fishers to support effective and science-based eel management.

Overall, the visits highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration among research institutions, local stakeholders, and the private sector. They also reaffirmed the commitment of IFRDMD and SEAFDEC to promoting the responsible use and long-term sustainability of tropical anguillid eel resources in Indonesia.
