Online Sharing Lessons on Swamp Management for Sustainable Inland Fisheries

SEAFDEC/IFRDMD successfully organized the Online Sharing Lessons on Swamp Management for Sustainable Inland Fisheries on 28 October 2025, supported by the Japan Trust Fund VII (JTF VII) under the project titled “Enhanced Research Capacities for Sustainable Utilization and Management of Eel and Other Inland Fisheries Resources.” This activity was designed to strengthen the capacity of SEAFDEC Member Countries in enhancing their knowledge of the conservation and sustainable utilization of inland fishery resources. A total of six participants from Myanmar and Cambodia joined the event through an online platform, engaging in discussions and sharing experiences related to swamp management practices.

Swamp ecosystems are vital components of inland water resources that provide habitats for diverse aquatic species, support fisheries production, and sustain the livelihoods of local communities. However, these ecosystems are under serious threat due to land conversion, pollution, environmental degradation, and the impacts of climate change. Recognizing the importance of safeguarding these resources, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD initiated this online session to promote knowledge exchange and regional cooperation in swamp management for sustainable inland fisheries.

The activity began with welcome remarks from Mr. Andi Soesmono, Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, who emphasized the significance of collaborative learning and regional partnerships in addressing ecosystem degradation. The first presentation, delivered by Mr. Aroef H. Rais, introduced the SPEECTRA approach, an integrated management framework developed by IFRDMD collaborated with Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE) of Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Indonesia, that considers ecological, social, and economic aspects in swamp resource management. Following this, Ms. Sevi Sawestri presented “Lessons Learned from Smart Fisheries Village of MMAF Projects,” which showcased innovative community-based and technology-driven strategies that could be adapted to swamp management efforts.

Participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing perspectives on local challenges and solutions to sustain swamp fisheries in their respective countries. Dr. Dina Muthmainnah facilitated the formulation of recommendations focusing on regional collaboration and knowledge sharing, while Mr. Toru Shimoda, Deputy Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, delivered the closing remarks highlighting the importance of continued cooperation among ASEAN Member States.
