After one month having short course in Japan, Vipen Adiansyah, researcher of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, gives his training report on Monday, January 28th 2019. The training covered two learning focuses, fish otolith analysis (ageing and microstructure) and resource management.
“Otolith are paired structures composed of biogenic calcium carbonate, typically in the form of aragonite, deposited on a protein matrix. The collection, preparation, and interpretation of structural features of otolith can provide for tropical fisheries much of the biological information that historically has been incorporated into fisheries management decision-making elsewhere,” explained Vipen.
The short course was started from October 3rd to November 1st, 2018 and divided to three parts with one lecturer for each study and held in two Universities in Japan. Mitsuhiro Nakaya, Ph.D. from Hokkaido University gave a lecture about Otolith Analysis, the lecture about Resource Management was given by Prof. Dr. Takahashi Matsuishi from Hokkaido University, and Prof. Dr. Noritaka Mochioka from Kyushu University gave a lecture about Microchemistry.
This is not the first short course that SEAFDEC/IFRDMD joined. Some short coursess or training have been arranged and conducted by IFRDMD and participated by IFRDMD staff and researchers who have competence to be selected. The SEAFDEC has chosen Marino-Forum 21 to arrange all schedules and accommodation based on business consignment agreement on February 22nd 2016. Through a number of short courses, it is expected that all selected SEAFDEC/IFRDMD staff and researchers can improve their capacity, gain more knowledge and experience, expand networking with overseas researcher and also improve analytical skill as researcher and English skill as well.
After the training finished, every staff who has finished the short course is expected to bring their new experiences and knowledge to bring The IFRDMD to a new high level. Hence, many expert staff and/or researchers who are competent can contribute their expertise on fisheries management decision-making in inland water capture fisheries and to support the responsibility of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD.
