Workshop on CPUE Analysis and Stock Assessment for Tropical Anguillid Eel Held in Bandung, Indonesia

From June 19 to 22, 2025, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), through its Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD), successfully conducted a technical workshop on CPUE (Catch Per Unit Effort) analysis and stock assessment for tropical anguillid eel. The workshop was held in Bandung, Indonesia, as part of the JAIF-supported project titled “Development of Stock Assessment Methods and Strengthening of Resources Management Measures for Tropical Anguillid Eel in Southeast Asia.”
This important activity aimed to analyze glass eel abundance data that has been collected continuously since 2013, serving as a foundation for developing scientifically sound management measures for the conservation and sustainable use of tropical anguillid eel resources across the region.
The workshop was made possible through the generous support of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) Project Phase 2. A key highlight of the workshop was the participation of Prof. Toshihide Kitakado from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT), Japan, who kindly served as the instructor. Prof. Kitakado guided participants through statistical and analytical approaches to interpret the glass eel data and derive meaningful insights for stock assessment.
The event was also honored by the presence of the representatives of the SEAFDEC Secretariat, Mr. Fumiya Takahashi, the Senior Expert and Assistant Project Manager for the Japanese Trust Fund Programs (ATFM) and Ms. Youkongkaew Parington, the Administrative Assistant for the JAIF Project, who contributed their support and feedback throughout the sessions.
The workshop was attended by Mr. Andi Soesmono, Chief of IFRDMD, who officially opened the event, along with Mr. Toru Shimoda, Deputy Chief of IFRDMD, and five technical staff. Their active involvement reflected the department’s strong commitment to advancing inland fishery research and regional collaboration.
This workshop marks another significant step in strengthening scientific capacity within the ASEAN region to manage tropical anguillid eel populations effectively, ensuring both ecological sustainability and livelihood security for communities that depend on this valuable resource.
