SEAFDEC paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia

The Deputy Secretary General of SEAFDEC, the Chief of AQD, and the Chief of IFRDMD, along with senior officials from the Secretariat and Departments of SEAFDEC paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Extension and Human Resources Development, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) on July 2, 2025, at Mina Bahari Building 3, 7th Floor, to discuss their flagship event on microplastic mitigation in aquatic environments. This meeting laid the groundwork for the Workshop on Mitigation and Strategic Policies to Address Microplastic Pollution in Marine Fisheries and Inland Waters in Southeast Asia—“Strengthening the Blue Economy through Plastic Pollution Management Strategies in Water Systems”—to be held on July 2–3, 2025, in Jakarta.

The meeting was warmly received by the Director General, Dr. I Nyoman Radiarta, who congratulated the newly appointed Deputy Secretary General of SEAFDEC, Mr. Koichi Tahara. He, then introduced fisheries schools offering full scholarships for fisheries students and coastal communities, providing standard training materials, and leveraging a network of extension officers nationwide as the frontline in policy dissemination. Dr. Nyoman expressed strong support and hope that the two-day workshop and field visit would be productive, while praising the alignment of the event with the Ministry’s plastic reduction agenda. Dr. Nyoman officially invited Mr. Tahara to visit Palembang, the headquarters of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, to witness the MMAF–SEAFDEC synergy in action.

Mr. Tahara reaffirmed SEAFDEC’s commitment to sustainable fisheries cultivation, fisheries management, and the fight against plastic, while sharing his enthusiasm for exchanging regional achievements and best practices.

Dr. Nyoman concluded the meeting by thanking all participants for their active participation and expressing his confidence that the workshop outcomes would be promptly implemented in MMAF and SEAFDEC programs.
