This initiative was conducted in parallel with a hydroacoustic survey under the project “Enhanced Research Capacities for Sustainable Utilization and Management of Eel and Other Inland Fisheries Resources,” which is funded by the Japan Trust Fund (JTF) 7. Both projects reflect SEAFDEC’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation in inland fisheries research and resource management.
On 27 May 2025, the SEAFDEC/IFRDMD delegation visited the Fisheries Office of Ogan Komering Ulu Regency in Baturaja. The team was warmly welcomed by the Head of the Aquaculture Division and the Head of the Inland Fisheries Empowerment Division. During the visit, Mr. Andi Soesmono, Chief of IFRDMD, introduced the roles and functions of SEAFDEC and IFRDMD, and explained the objectives and scope of the research activities to be undertaken.
From 28 to 29 May 2025, the IFRDMD team, led by Deputy Chief Mr. Toru Shimoda, conducted a field survey along the Ogan River. The survey involved the collection of water, sediment, and samples of seven fish species. A purposive sampling method with transect establishment was applied to ensure systematic data collection. Additionally, hydroacoustic technology was utilized to estimate fish density and assess the condition of the aquatic environment.
Sampling activities were carried out at nine locations along the river: Batu Putih, Desa Laya, Ogan Bridge 4, Ogan Bridge 3, Ogan Bridge 2, Tanjung Kemala, Banuayu, New Ogan Bridge, and one additional reference point. All collected samples were then transported to the Laboratory of the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE) in Palembang, under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, for further analysis.
These collaborative efforts aim to strengthen regional research capacity, promote sustainable inland fisheries management, and contribute to reducing the environmental impacts of freshwater debris originating from fisheries in Southeast Asia.
